“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22
I’d like to ask you all a question, it’s very simple but very serious. What is Christianity? What sets it apart from all of the other religions out there? Is it something special or is it just a way that we home-schoolers can identify ourselves by?
Ok that was more than a question but I’m sure most of you or all of you were answering the questions quite quickly. But I would like to focus on the answer most people give to the first question. What is Christianity?
There are many things that set us apart from other religions one of which is that our God actually exists, that we experience his presence, and that we can interact with him. But there is one more major difference between us and other religions.
We’re only part religion.
Ok I know that probably raised an eyebrow, or more, but I want to introduce you to a theory I have.
Christianity is more than a religion, it is a life.
Religion = a particular system of faith and worship.
Does God call us to worship him? Yes. Does he call us to faith? Yes. But he calls us to so much more than rituals. He calls us to live for him, to die for him.
Several times in the Bible Christ calls our attention to the empty rituals of the Pharisees.
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” Matthew 6:7
“But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Matthew 15:9
Our worship is to be a personal relationship with the one true God. Our lives are to be nothing less.
Life = vitality, vigor, or energy.
God tells us in Mark 12:30 to love the LORD with all our soul, mind and strength. This calls for our whole being.
When you became a Christian what happened? Well first off something most people don’t realize is by proclaiming that you are a Christian you are representing Christ. You have also dedicated your life to the work of the Kingdom of God, and you are now not servants of sin but the servants of God.
“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” Romans 6:22
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Our lives were “purchased with a price” (specifically the blood of Jesus Christ) therefore we must live for Christ. We must more than worship him, and more than believe (have faith) in him, for even the devils do that. (James 2:19) Christianity is more than a religion it is a fight, a life as a soldier meant to be lived on the battlefield.
“Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 15:26
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21
So do more than religion do Christianity.
“Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.” Hebrews 11:33-34
